Indie is not a genre, or at least it shouldn't be

I was reading a blog that I read sometimes called THIS INDIE LIFE and he posed the question that alot of ask about whether something is still indie if it goes mainstream. The answer in my opinion is yes coupled with a it depends. But what struck me is that he used this commercial as an example. "This commercial has all the hallmarks of an Indie ballad: Low-fi tones bordering on boring, monotone/dressed-down singing, and acoustic simplicity…I mean, it possesses the indie essence, but is there such thing as “commercial” indie, or is that a contradiction of terms?" My main problem is this.... Indie is not a genre and by that i mean the way something sounds. It's like how people took the word POP which just meant popular music and turned it into a genre as if the lovemakers and Nsync or Britney and Jay-Z have anything in common musicially. In my humble opinion indie should be used in music circles as a way to know who's doing things themselves or atleast has not corporate backing and who isn't.
