Donna Maria answers questions about life, indie, and why she loves to help
page54 Donna Maria is just simply a great person. From the first time you see her on the Independent Business Network, you can feel her love through the screen. Her very goal seems to be to help all the independents she can and have fun doing it. We hooked up with Donna Maria a few months ago and got some of our questions answered. Where are you from? Born and raised in Washington, DC. Since 2006, I have made my home in Charlotte, NC Where do you look for inspiration? Pretty much everything inspires me to take some kind of action. I can’t really pinpoint one thing, but I can say that connecting with people inspires me to excel. I find purpose in collaborating with others. Mutually beneficial personal and business relationships help me be the best I can be. Where is you favorite spot on earth? Cape Town, South Africa Where is the best place to start? Start with a product or service that there’s a need for, a good plan and a whole lot of branded digital technology. How did you start? I noticed that there were a lot of people starting small cosmetics businesses without the business resources to help them be successful. My background as an attorney and business counselor made it for me to see where I could provide a valuable service. That’s how the Indie Beauty Network started – back in 2000. The original name was the Handmade Toiletries Network, then the Handmade Beauty Network, and since 2006, the Indie Beauty Network. How many times have you wanted to quit? Twice, once when I ran out of money and once again when I ran out of money. How do you pay your bills? On time. We are debt free and work with cash on hand. How do you become legendary? By assessing your God-given strengths and gifts and putting them to use to help others. What makes you good? I’m not good. I’m just doing what I feel I was called to do. If I help someone today, I feel like I’ve done a good job. What is your end goal? To help as many men, women and families harness their shared talents and gifts to provide for themselves, help other people and create an asset and a legacy to leave to their children and other young people in their families. What is your style? Relaxed, joyful, confident, consistent. What is your formula? Do your best and leave the results to God. Who have you enlisted for help? God, my husband, my children, other successful entrepreneurs – especially members of the Indie Beauty Network. Seriously. Why are you independent? Because it’s the only way to fully express what I have to offer in a way that also allows me the flexibility to be with my family when and where I want to. Why do you do what you do? To help people. Why should we care? Because my work enhances people’s lives and shares with them the tools to enjoy their lives both personally and professionally. My work makes a difference and that’s very gratifying and rewarding. Why don’t most people make it? Because they sell themselves short and give up before they even try. Also, they have unrealistic expectations many times. I agree with what I’ve heard Les Brown say. Here’s a paraphrase: “People who are unsuccessful are not unsuccessful because they aim too high and miss. They are unsuccessful because they aim too low and hit.” Love that!!
