We told you way back when that the big dogs are just biting what the fresher independent world is doing (it’s not secret) but how far they gonna go. Damn! We found this story on theconsumerist.com and I say it’s high time we start hitting up the side of wall marts with some “art”. I don’t usually condone this type of stuff but they deserve it for this one.
Looks like Walmart didn’t just rip off the Nazis, they also ripped off artist Shep Fairey, known for his “OBEY GIANT” creations.
Both have the same skull. Shep’s has, “Defiant Since ‘89″. Walmart’s says, “Since 1978.”
Shirt was on sale at Obey’s merch shop Karmaloop, though it’s currently out of stock (google cache here). You can still get it through a few other distributors.
We venture that Walmart’s ripoff is not just a photoshop of the OBEY design. Note the inset star on the Obey design. We posit that Walmart’s designer researched a clean version of the Totenkopf skull and deliberately ignored that it was found in the “Copyright Free Nazi Imagery” section.
In case you didn’t know there are no more “independent” tradeshows when time for MAGIC comes around in Las Vegas. MAGIC acquired Pool and Project tradeshows last year and now there’s something new coming. We talked to Rama of Add Art Space and he gave us this info as well as some qoutes from Ryan Walker formally of Pool Tradeshow.
UNITED Trade Show was created out of necessity for the evolution & survival of brands worldwide. Founded by apparel trade show veteran Ryan Walker specifically to showcase the most important and influential apparel, footwear & accessories today.
“After Magic’s recent acquisition & redevelopment of both Pool & Project [trade shows] my favorite brands felt they had no options for Las Vegas trade shows so we UNITED together and will debut this February” says Walker.
By showcasing only a few dozen carefully curated exhibitors from all over the world, UNITED Trade Show will be able to focus on trade show fundamentals but in a new and creative way. “We are adding a ton of value to the show in the way of education, music & art. We are working on various panels, round table discussions & seminars. Steve Aoki (Dim Mak) has partnered with UNITED and will handle the entertainment & music department. There’s even talk of a film festival & recording studio. Of course everything is themed to compliment the show and designed to bring buyers, press and brands under the same roof” - Walker
Look for more info soon.
I’ve been waiting for this for ooohh sooo long! Hip hop Xmas stuff! Christmas would be so much better when I can hang Run DMC off my tree with some of that fake snow (we from Cali). Well until someone decides to do the ornaments we’ve got some (w)rapping paper. Thanks to Joshspear for putting us up on this.
