Indie Who, Indie What? Chocolate

I’ve seen alot of people incorporate “indie” into alot of things but chocolate has never been one. You have to love it. Chocolate Mojitos, Chocolate tangerine and chili candies, it goes on and on. While our balding host could use a chocolate pick-me-up himself, you have to love hearing about the making chocolate on the Chocolate Channel from the Indie Food Network. Awww yea, flame on!

LEGENDmag: Soul By The Pound!

LEGENDmag Issue 18 - Soul By The Pound

With the net being a catalyst for most magazines to blog their hearts away and all but drop their quality design and editorial, we’ve decided to keep the great quality you’ve come to know us for. You can now look for LEGENDmag to have a print magazine printed annually, and a monthly pdf and flash magazine that is always quality.

What better way to start our new online adventures then with some great music finds. From our international favorites Sake One, J Boogie and Michael Fakesch to the locals we found on both coasts and everywhere in between.

Staying with our empowering roots, we’ve also included a BIY on how to become a music aficionado. To sprinkle even more goodness, we also included Josh Silvera and Paul Torres as our Show n Tell artist.

Late this month we’ll be adding in a feature editorial piece on Digital Music and other features and goodies.

In conjunction with our new launch we’re going to be holding events at Club 6 in San Francisco and the Artisan Gallery in Sacramento in the next coming months.

Stay tuned for the next level of Life…Independent.

Look for the Soul By The Pound Issue early April!

Store Review: RimeNYC

One of my new favorite shops is Rime in Brooklyn, NYC!  There are alot of boutiques that open with really overpriced furniture and the cleanist possible layout and design.  What they pay for in look and “appeal” they lack in warmth.  You never feel cozee and the service almost never makes up for it.

Rime is the antithesis of this new school buy your customer mentallity.  Not only is the service friendly, they actually make suggestions and if they don’t have it in will offer to order it for you.  I miss this kind of thing and Rime Does it well.  They could use more jeans but I’m not mad at them.  Make sure you check them out.

Zine Review: The Plug

Checked out the March 2008 issue of The Plug today, and I have to say it is quite funny. The piece on the hand-made “public service” signs was fantastic, and the “found camera” spot is one of those why-didn’t-I-think-of-it moments. Have a gander and enjoy!

It Doesn’t Have an ocean view, but Bette’s Oceanview Diner is well worth the wait!

Bette’s Pie

We LEGENDmag’ers love to eat almost as much as we love patronizing indie establishments. So when the two things merge into one, it is almost always a win-win!

Today was one such experience. Rai-mon and I took a hankerin’ to some breakfast and decided on Bette’s Oceanview Diner in Berkeley, CA. After a some Google Maps jostling, a little street parking action, and a short walk, we arrived at Bette’s.

First thing you see—even before you enter the door—is that the place is packed! (Note: We did not know that today was a holiday for many out there, and I imagine this place remains extremely popular on weekends) Then you look up and notice the GIANT slice of pie hanging from the ceiling. It is massive (yes, that is it in the photo). And after that, things become blurry in a mad rush of rumbling tummy, marvelous odors, and a flurry of waitresses.

Then your food comes. Oh goodness… and behold it was delicious! Practically all conversation stopped at our table for the first half of the meal, while we scarfed-down German pancakes, regular pancakes, omelets, bacon, turkey sausage, and cantaloupe. Perfect.

More than enough to make you forget that there is no ocean view! (Although we hear that from the roof, it is spectacular!)

Grown-ups Get Down San Francisco Kid-Style in Massive Potrero Hill Bigwheel Race

Yesterday was Easter Sunday for everyone else, but you know what that means for San Franciscans? Yep, another edition of “BYOB: Bring Your Own Bigwheels!”

Contestants line up at the BYOB Starting Line

Showcasing three official rounds of “racing”, where waves of adults took to the steep streets of Potrero Hill and held on tight as they crashed, slid, and bounced their way to the bottom—then hoofed it back up to the top for yet another round of madness! We witnessed every form of bigwheel possible, including some favorites: the recycling can on it’s side, the 4-man bobsled, the tandem bigwheel, and the wheel-less wagon.

Potrero Hill Bigwheel RacePotrero Hill Bigwheel RacePotrero Hill Bigwheel Race

There was probably a 10-to-1 ratio of onlookers-to-bigwheelers, and with close to 50+ people barreling downhill… it made for a packed little course and an extremely fun day.

Everyone who walked away without major injury could be declared a winner, but no doubt by the end of the races everyone was smiling and wishing the street could be kept closed longer. And as the sun set on the top of the hill, hippies strummed folk songs in the park, contestants held their rides high with pride, trash-collectors scoured the course in costume, and couples rode the remains of their plastic vehicles into the sunset.

Found: Design Store In Denver Has Major Flavor!

dscn0612.JPGAndrew - Worker Bee at Compostion

Some people get it right. Compostion “a store for design”, in the BelMar District of Denver, Colorado has one of those such people at the helm (Hi, Jen). We ran across her shop while in search of Denver culture (it’s not as hard as you might think). There’s something about the way they tie in all of the different products they sell.

From jewelery and clothings, to beds and books it’s just a well put together shop. When we get our pic in the mail we’ll share but until then, go an sign up for their website relaunch list. We here from a good source it’s going to be a doozy.

Run, don’t walk, to see ‘Tings Dey Happen’, back at The Marsh in San Francisco for a limited time

Tings Dey Happen poster

If you are going to be anywhere near San Francisco in the next 30 days, you need to make a point of seeing Tings Dey Happen at The Marsh theater. Back in SF after a year-long stint in New York… not only is this one-man-show an amazing performance, filled with remarkable characters and impressions; but it is also a frank discussion about the war-ravaged country of Nigeria and the world’s oil addiction.

Granted, oil-politics might not be your idea of a fun night out, but trust me… the writer/performer Dan Hoyle makes the performance surprisingly compelling and fun through his impressions of the people of Nigeria.

Tings Dey Happen runs March 20 thru April 19, 2008, Thursdays & Fridays at 8:00 pm, and Saturdays at 8:30 pm at The Marsh Theater, 1062 Valencia Street (near 22nd Street) San Francisco, CA 94110. For tickets, call 800-838-3006.

Oh, and make sure you tell them that LEGENDmag sent you!

25 New Comics Give Stellar Performance at Local San Francisco Comedy Clubhouse

SF Comedy College logoOn a whim, LEGENDmag headed over to San Francisco’s own Comedy College performance last night to check out some budding comics at the Comedy Clubhouse. After stopping at the local liquor store for some quick BYOB-action, droppin’ $5 at the door, and locating 4 seats together in the packed theater; we settled in for a bit of much-needed laughter. There were comics of all ages, races, genders, sexual orientations, and levels of experience performing. And the MC for the evening kept the pace going for quite a fun night of laughing.

Honestly, I went in grumpy, tired and not in the mood to laugh, and within minutes I was laughing out loud—always a great thing at a comedy club, especially in such an intimate theater. The time flew by with each comedian getting from 1-7 minutes to perform their routine, and aside from a few dead moments—quickly cut short by the magic 1-minute red light—we were cracking up the whole time!

For those of you interested in learning the art of being funny, SF Comedy College is always accepting new people, and they can be contacted on their website sfcomedycollege.com.

If you want to go support the arts, then check The Clubhouse website for dates and times of upcoming shows.

Ashkon be Hot Tubbin’ on the Late Night

I can’t quite tell if he is being ironic or not, but the song is solid. Now, if I could only figure what the whole chorus is saying…?

UPDATE: Looks like LEGENDmag discovered a real gem once again! When we posted here, there was only 5,500 views… and now take a look!!

UPDATE 2: According to our sources, yes that is his real phone number in the video.
