More and more companies that are found online are all about getting you off your computer and connecting with real flesh and blood people. In step Air Bed and Breakfast.
It’s always good to save some money. The first question you get when talking to Joe one of the co-founders of the site is “Are you planning on traveling any time soon”. After he’s figured out what you’re going for and where you’re going he lets you know the value in using the service, his questions are similar to process on the site. “The difference is do you want to make a connection while you’re there or just stay in a room”.
It’s amazing that as soon as you remember things are always better staying with a local or making a connection with another human being, you wonder why you ever stayed in hotels in the first place. I’m especially excited about this service because of my recent trips to Denver and NY and the fun I had staying with friends instead of a hotel.
So here’s the run down for how things work on the site.
1 Find your event
2 Find/Post a room
3 Connect with a person
Never doubt the power of those with vision! Nicacelly clothing has had our attention for a while (check the cover of LEGENDmag 17). And she’s done it yet again. You’re going to love the “expander purse” that came out this season.
We haven’t gotten details yet but they’re soon to follow.
LEGENDmag stayed in the Hotel Des Art in SF last weekend and it was a great time. It’s in San Francisco on Bush street and is a hop-skip-and-jump from some of our favorite spots (111 Minna, DaDa Bar/Lounge, and Farmer Brown) and so we were really excited to stay. Some hotels lure you in with great services, and others have restaurants with great food. But for all of you art lovers, Hotel Des Art offers well… Art!
They have rooms painted by some greats in the urban art seen.

It was only by coincidence that we stayed in The London Police room. It made the experience exactly what a hotel stay should be but almost never is… unique. You find these little notes to the occupant and thoughts they had while painting all over the room. It makes you want to stay in the room and discover a little. Hats off to Hotel Des Art for a great stay.
LEGENDmag attended the SF Web 2.0 Expo yesterday and decided to stop by the keynote. It was one of our smarter moves, as both Tim O’Reilly and Clay Shirky presented thought-provoking ideas about where Web 2.0 is-and-isn’t, and (most importantly) what we are going to be doing with it next.
Rai-mon — My hope is that no one misses the boat, kc! It seems as though things are happening in our world that a lot of people don’t understand but should if they want to partake in this “new world” emerging from the matrix.
kc! — True, this conference seems to be about “bigger picture” ideas, and when you get into this realm, a lot of people easily get lost. I think that is why Web 2.0 typically gets brushed aside as a fad. But it was clear that O’Reilly and Shirky were strict on point (as well as being very good public speakers). Hopefully, those tens of thousands in attendance will be able to translate those visions into reality.
Rai-mon — And that my friend is where the challenge lies. It’s one thing to start a new company that is steeped in the beliefs of Web 2.0’s future—like we heard from our drunken sales friend at the bar—but it’s a different story taking those ideas and applying them to a company that is already successful but lives and feeds in a less internet savvy, more 1.0 world.
kc! — I have faith in the brilliant minds currently running amok throughout downtown San Francisco, that this translation is destined to happen, and soon!
For those not in attendance, here is part of Tim O’Reilly’s keynote:
With the mellow sounds of typically-good Bay Area DJs… instead, playing uncharacteristically boring, crowd-friendly 80’s hits, the Diggmeet-up was a bit like a Junior High School dance. It was a veritable who’s-who of internet-famous nerds, geeks, and dweebs standing around awkwardly talking amongst themselves as a few intoxicated girls boogied down. And although the bar was packed, a Digg-sponsored bar tab was no where to be found, leaving most of us that attended with a dry mouth and empty pockets.
But it was not all bad music taste and rarely-used sportcoats. LEGENDmag met a bunch of great people in the crowd, including iJustine, Sebastian from Solidground, Glen at Abrahams Design, and Troy from Workhabit. Additionally, we saw a few old friends like Ryan from Viddyou, Min Jung, Jason from Joyent, and Kevin from Raptr. And to top it off, we found a real-live mythical unicorn amoungst the partygoers… so that has to count for something, right?
I just got my first “do something about gas prices this summer” email. It wasn’t a band together and don’t buy gas all on the same day but it also wasn’t much better. I’m not a economic wiz but I know enough and this was my response to the plan below.
“Here’s the Idea: For the rest of this year, DON’T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL.
If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.
But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It’s really simple to do! Now, don’t wimp out on me at this point…keep reading and I’ll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!
I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) …”
Here was my response to the email.
Do me a favor and send this one out to your list as well. I have a friend that is a chemical engineer for Exxon and so I definitely have an inside track.
I don’t believe I know that many of you and believe me the last time I “replied all” to anyone was back in college (to long ago then I want to mention). I don’t want to be a spoil sport to any ones revolution, speaking out, or doing what they feel is right but I do want to just say something that may help you in the long term.
The market demands that if the supply goes way up then we’ll be ok. Or if our consumption goes way down we’ll also see a decrease. But unless that happens we’ll be in trouble. When one gas company looses money guess what they do? Sell gas to another gas company because they’re supply is low and guess what then? They raise the price because buying from a competitor isn’t cheap. And this is all assuming that no one is influencing the market the way they want to see it go (a editorial for another time).
Wanna have your prices lower? Convince the rest of the country to not be hot and not use their A/C this summer. Or make most of the country use solar panels. If that’s not the case people will need more gas for summer trips, summer ac, summer concerts and summer art shows as well, don’t forget those summer bonus sales trips to the coolest places on the planet.
It’s like anything else. If you want to lose weight don’t call a doctor, go to the gym and change your regular diet. If you want to save money on gas, buy a bike, take public transit and then put your finger up to the man.
I love you all and this message is just me saying do whatever it is you can but make sure you’re doing something that does a good for the long term and not something that might/could but probably won’t help for this summer!
They say that any press is good press and well I guess this is a test of that fact. Honestly we stay away from dissing people in our magazine. We like to show you the stuff we like instead of harping on the stuff we don’t but today that rule is being thrown out because our editorial department just got the straw that broke the independent camels back.
Below you will see a press release we recieved early today. The press release is well done but the subject is what’s the problem. Tons of you have been wondering for months or even years “how do these really bad songs get played” and this is the reason. Even artist who put out crap for the lowest common demonenator of thought have press people. They push you to write about someone and if you keep the links in, you’ll even probably get tons of hits. That’s how the game works ladys and gents.
So I just thought I would share that when we share music, movies, art, politics, food, furniture, gadgets, etc we’ve filtered though10 or 20 stories like this one to make sure we’re giving you the good stuff. I’m not complaining at all, I just thought it was comical.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BLASTRO.COM PREMIERES “SMELL YO D*CK” VIDEO
NEW YORK, NY (April 22, 2008) - Today Blastro.com premieres the official “Smell Yo D*ck” music video. The song, which has over 330,000 views on YouTube and over 230,000 plays on MySpace, has catapulted Bartow, FL rapper RISKAY to Internet fame.
The video for “Smell Yo D*ck” can be seen exclusively at Blastro.com by clicking here: http://www.blastro.com/player/riskaysmellyodick.html
“Smell Yo D*ck,” which the NEW YORK TIMES raves “…is almost as catchy as the concept” and NEW YORK MAGAZINE claims is “An instant classic,” has spread like wildfire across cyberspace. Blogger Perez Hilton raved about the rapper on his website, posted a video of himself singing the song (which has over 500,000 views on YouTube, http://youtube.com/watch?v=eiA8U8_OXro) and even asked Riskay to perform at his SXSW showcase. Comedian David Cross named the song in his “Top 10 of 2007” list on BrooklynVegan.com and Howard Stern brought the song from computer speakers to stereos when he played the song multiple times on his radio show in February.
The video for “Smell Yo D*ck” was filmed earlier this month in Fort Lauderdale, FL with director Eric Kline (Mariah Carey, Bon Jovi), and features performances by Aviance and Real, who also contribute vocals to the song.
LEGENDmag was out at Nasa Ames Research Center at Moffett Field in lovely Mountain View to attend the second annual Yuri’s Night World Space Party! The event started last year as a celebration of the first person in space, Yuri Gagarin and similar events happen simultaneously around the world. Think of it as Burningman-meets-science fair with a sprinkling of NASA-rave thrown in for flavor… totally fun, yet a little peculiar.

LEGENDmag attended last night’s showing of Stravinsky’s Firebird ballet (”Crucible-style”) and it was nothing short of spectacular. So much so, that as I sit here typing, it is actually difficult to explain just what made it so remarkable….
Could it be the breathtaking acrobatic talent; the good vs. evil metaphoric dance interpretations featuring traditional ballet and dirty, street break-dancing; or possibly the political/social satire; or maybe the motorcycle acrobatics, flaming trans-am, and brilliant metal sculptures? Then again, it could just be the fact that everything was on fire!
Nevertheless, there is barely time left to still catch this world-class performance. It is not to be missed, and will surely spoil you—in the best way possible—for any future ballet performances you plan to attend!
And for those that didn’t know, The Crucible is a non-profit school offering classes in all the industrial arts. They had a number of disciplines on display in the lobby before the show, including: metal work, welding, kinetics, neon & light, jewelry, and glass blowing. Classes are now in session, check their website for a schedule (or to volunteer).
It’s funny, you would assume there were no other candidates even running in this election. We know that people are always thinking “well no one besides McCain, Clinton, or Obama are going to win” but I thought I would atleast share with you where you can look if you’re looking to place your vote else where.
Meat Beat completely flubbed the dub on this one. I arrived excited—expecting something deep and fresh from my favorite electronic crew—and walked out thoroughly disappointed. Sure, there were new songs from Autoimmune and the accompanying video samples, but overall it was the same frenetic, disjointed assembly as before. And frankly they looked as bored on stage as I was in the audience.
As for tour support… we missed the 1st opening act, and the 2nd was dull at best.
LEGENDmag recommendation: If you are a fan who hasn’t seen them live in years, then you will have a good time. There were enough old fans there to keep it packed. But if you caught a leg of their last tour, then don’t bother with this one.
